Colorado High Country – Not Just for Adults

Sure, grownups love to play in the snow, and the Colorado High Country of Summit County is custom-made for such activities. But kids just naturally take to a variety of adventures – even more so than the adults – and the area is simply chock full of pastimes that kids of all ages can partake in. If you’re looking for kid-appropriate activities in the winter, Frisco can’t be beat.

Winter Activities for the Kids

Summit County offers an amazing variety of kid-friendly activities year-round.

Kidtopia is back at Keystone resort for a huge variety of daily activities for the whole family, but definitely geared for the enjoyment of the younger set:

Enjoy a good scavenger hunt? Adults can help the kids with this one. Visit the Activities and Dining center in River Run Village for a Kidtopia Scavenger Hunt stamp book and hint map, then collect each available stamp in locations around the resort hill and base areas. When you’ve completed your collection, redeem the book for a special prize.

One activity everyone will enjoy – fresh-baked cookies available daily at the Dercum Square Ice Rink. Who would not love a warm cookie (complimentary) offered at 4:00pm throughout the Kidtopia event?

At the top of Dercum Mountain stands the world’s largest snow fort – a fortress of fun for the whole family. This giant snow castle includes slides, hidden tunnels, and a snow maze. Amazing to look at, and even more fun to explore.

Every Saturday night, be at River Run Village at 4:00pm to join Ripperoo and his friends for Ripperoo’s Village Parade. Characters will dance and parade through the village, and the parade includes a horse-drawn wagon for the kids to ride along. There’s also a huge Keystone float, and fireworks after the parade at 7:00pm.

Kidtopia also includes kid-friendly activities such as face painting, ice cream with Ripperoo, movie matinees, and Friday’s Wacky Tacky party at Kidtopia Headquarters.

When it’s too cold to stay outside, or when you’re just looking for indoor activities, head to the Kidtopia Headquarters in River Run Village, near the Dercum Ice Rink. No registration or advanced reservations are required, and all ages are welcome daily from 9:00am – 3:00pm. Activities in the Headquarters include foosball, Wii, coloring, board games, giant Legos, even paper snowflake crafts. Remember that Kidtopia is not a drop-off zone – family members must supervise.

Additional Nearby Activities

Nearby Silverthorne provides additional options to entertain the kids:

Silverthorne’s Rec Center boasts an indoor aquatics center that includes a diving pool, lap pool, shallow “beach” pool for the youngsters, and another “splash” 3-foot pool at the bottom of their huge spiral slide. This is a great place to relax and have fun when you’re ready to come in from winter activities.

Ice skating is also available outdoors at Silverthorne’s North Pond Park. Ice skating is also offered at the Breckenridge ice rink.

Frisco Activities

Frisco also has a wide variety of activities available for the kids.

Frisco Adventure Park includes a multi-lane tubing hill and beginner ski & ride hill, each serviced by an easy-to-use surface lift. Easy tubing runs are offered, as well as longer and more adventurous rides.

For a different snow activity, try out the Tumble Bubbles at the Frisco Adventure Park. Treat yourself like a hamster, rolling and sliding on the snow in a huge clear bubble. This is something everyone needs to try.

Frisco Nordic Center offers ski trails, snowshoe trails, and lessons in classic and skate skiing.

For a special adventure, load up the whole family for a sleigh ride at Two Below Zero. Both scenic rides and options that include dinner and a live music show for entertainment are available. Two Below Zero is rated the #1 sleigh ride in America, and is sure to please everyone.
