Springtime is Still Skiing Time in Summit County CO

Even though the holiday festivities and most of our coldest weather have passed, the High Country is still a haven for die-hard skiers and riders. In the beautiful Colorado Rockies there is plenty of fresh powder, abundant snow-covered trails, and resorts catering to your every need for relaxation, entertainment and outdoor sports.

As the air temperatures rise, so do the adventurous spirits of skiers, with some even taking to the slopes in beach attire paired with ski boots. Regardless of your fashion choices, the slopes are ready for Spring adventure, with resorts such as Arapahoe Basin in full operation with lifts and plenty of snow sometimes even until Independence Day. Most resorts welcome skiers and snowboarders into the Spring months, attracting snow lovers well into April.

Warmer days contribute to more options for enjoying sunny hours on the spacious decks and patios of many eateries and pubs for relaxing between ski runs and simply enjoying the majesty of the High Country scenery. Spring weather also increases the popularity of outdoor heated pools and hot tubs.

Where to Ski

Many resorts remain in full swing for Spring skiers:

Arapahoe Basin almost always takes the prize for staying open the latest into the season. It offers some of the most challenging slopes in the area, along with beginner-level slopes to accommodate the taste and skill levels of every skier.

Keystone is a premier skiing destination with three mountains of increasing skill levels, and is also well known for its night skiing and a lit park for snow tuning.

Breckenridge is not only one of the most popular ski resorts in Colorado, but it is a town all its own, with a vast variety of unique shops, taverns, restaurants, galleries, and entertainment venues. For skiers and snowboarders, Breckenridge is a mecca, with four mountains beckoning to every level from beginner to expert.

When to Go

Timing for your Spring visit to the High Country depends on whether you prefer being part of the crowd or getting away from it all. Weekends are of course the busiest times for skiing in the popular resort areas, and slopes can become all the more congested during periods such as President’s Day and Spring break.

Mid-week is the least crowded time to take advantage of shorter lift lines and less populous slopes and tube runs. You can even adjust your meal times to hit the lifts when larger crowds shift to restaurants for lunch or evening meals.
