IMG0099The Colorado Rockies are known for their perfect winter snow and amazing skiing and snowboarding that brings. But, it’s the summers here that inspire people to pack their bags and call our dear state home. Once the last bit of snow melts, the wildflowers in Colorado begin to appear, but don’t reach full bloom until June or July. But, even as fall approaches, there’s still time to hit the trails and catch the last bloom of Colorado’s High Country wildflowers.

Here are a few of our favorite wildflower hikes in Summit County:

Mohawk Lakes

Mohawk Lakes offers a short, medium difficulty hike at 1,400 feet and a total distance of 6.6 miles from the Spruce Creek Trailhead. During your hike at Mohawk Lakes you can access dramatic waterfalls and abundant fields of wildflowers.

Hoosier Pass

Located at the county’s southern end, Hoosier Pass provides an enjoyable hike with great mountain views. This hike is known as one of the best in July and August for spotting a variety of wildflowers. So plan to spend a few hours here, as there is a lot to see and do. Even if hiking isn’t your thing, take advantage of the chance to get a lovely shot of the Continental Divide.

Baldy Mountain

Another way to experience Summit County’s wildflower trails is to head up an old mining road on Mt. Baldy. There you can park and explore the blooming alpine wildflowers, including nuttall’s linanthastrum and pleated gentian!

Cucumber Gulch

Cucumber Gulch is a designated wildlife preserve in the middle of Breckenridge Ski Resort. This easy hike offers a beautiful view of Ten Mile Range and the chance to see plenty of wildflowers. Make sure to hike in the early morning or evening for the best chance to encounter wildlife.

If you are looking for one last summer getaway and a peek at some of summer’s greatest natural color, book your stay at Frisco Inn and venture out for a wildflower hike!
