IMG_4303September is one of our favorite times of year to experience the majestic beauty of the Rocky Mountains. The air is cool, the aspens are changing from green to the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds of fall and the sky is as bright Colorado blue as ever. Taking a scenic drive through this seasonal mountain landscape is one the best ways to soak it all in and there’s no better place to make your home base than the Frisco Inn, central to some of the best scenic drives in the High Country.

Here are some of our favorites:

Boreas Pass

To get to Boreas Pass take I-70 W then Highway 9 S through Breckenridge. Make a left at the stoplight on the Southside of Breckenridge onto Boreas Pass Road. After 3.5 miles on the road, the pavement will end. From here, get out your mountain bike and enjoy a ride in the lovely fall weather! This six-mile dirt road was once home to narrow railroad tracks stretching to Denver, South Park and the Pacific Railroad. Boreas Pass Road was also used as a route by those in search for gold during the gold rush. This historic mountain road is a beauty with unforgettable views of colorful aspens, the Continental Divide, and Ten Mile Range.

Loveland Pass

From Frisco take I-70 E and exit 205 to the right toward Dillon. Follow Highway 6 past Keystone and A-Basin to the top of the Continental Divide at Loveland Pass. This staple of Summit County is known for being one of the best scenic drives in the area and you won’t be disappointed with the views. Once you reach the Summit there is a parking area so you can get out and snap some great shots of the Continental Divide.

Independence Pass

Independence Pass is rated as one of the most beautiful stretches of roadway in America and we agree. To get to the pass, take I-70 and exit 171 to pick up Highway 24. Once you get to Twin Lakes, continue on Highway 82 toward Aspen. This drive takes you through the San Isabel National Forest where you will get a glimpse of several of Colorado’s 14ers in Sawatch Range. If you make it all the way to Aspen, you can get a look at the Maroon Bells, one of Colorado’s most photographed locations and for good reason.

Don’t miss this great season in the High Country. We hope to see you in the area before the snow starts to fly.
