Many hillsides are awash with color, while others are yet to turn, so there will be opportunities for great viewing into early-October. The higher elevation drives and hikes will peak earlier, and the mid and lower elevation areas will last longer. Here are some of our recommendations for viewing:

Boreas Pass Drive

Once a high railroad pass between Denver and Leadville, the Boreas Pass is now a draw both for mountain bikers and those who enjoy beautiful views from the comfort of a car. At Boreas Pass, Colorado’s history and beauty walk hand in hand, available for anyone who ventures out to find them.

Ute Pass Drive Or Bike

This 31-mile round trip with about 2,000′ of climb starts at Silverthorne Elementary School, heads north on highway 9 on a slightly downhill route for 10 miles paralleling the Lower Blue River to Ute Pass Rd. The views of the Gore Range on the descent are wonderful.

Boreas Pass Area Hike

From the summit of Boreas Pass, hike past the huts and aim for the ridge between Boreas Mountain and Bald Mountain. You should be able to see Point 12,815 from the road. Aim for the right side of this bump as you hike up to the ridge. The trail follows the path of least resistance over grassy slopes through the loose rocks. Take a moment to walk to the edge and take in this beautiful view.
